Mail list guidelines
Aims of the mail list
The mail list is for web designers & developers who are interested in web standards (HTML, XHTML, XML, CSS, XSLT, Javascript, EcmaScript etc.) and best practices (accessible sites using valid and semantically correct code). The list aims to:
- Provide web developers and designers with a forum to discuss issues and share knowledge
- Provide web standards information and assistance to developers
- Promote "web standards" within the development community
Who runs the mail list?
The WSG mail list, and overall WSG group is facilitated by Peter Firminger and Russ Weakley. Our intention is not to RUN the group, just help facilitate interaction between members through meetings, the list and the website.
We also have a core group of senior WSG members that is involved in overall decisions.
However, the WSG is a community where you all have a say. If you have ideas for different directions, or suggestions that you feel may be beneficial to the group, let us know!
Posting to the list
Some basic guidelines before posting to the list:
- No attachments
- Turn off 'read' and 'delivery' receipts and vacation messages. These often bounce back to the list and cause many unwanted posts (offenders will be unsubscribed)
- Trim replies where possible
- Meaningful subject lines (NOT 'Help Needed' or 'CSS Problem')
- No hijacking other threads. Start a new thread for a new topic and don't be lazy by replying to another and changing the subject (it's still the same thread)
- Try to use plain text email rather than HTML email where possible.
- Code samples are fine, but not full pages of html or css code - much better to link to these items
- Try to remain on-topic as much as possible.
- Thank people that help you OFF LIST please
- Read all the posts in your inbox before answering so that multiple similar answers and answering closed threads are avoided as much as possible
- If you are going away and setting a vacation message, please edit your preferences so that you only recieve the Announce list or we'll delete you from the list
- Do not reply to a thread that has been closed by any of the core group - under any circumstances
- Do not post problems or complaints to the list. Instead, email Peter and Russ off-list (memberhelp @ webstandardsgroup.org)
If you wish to post a message to the list and are unsure if it is on-topic, please email Peter and Russ at memberhelp @ webstandardsgroup.org
What the list covers and does not cover
The mail list covers any topic associated with web standards including:
- Implementing Web Standards - eg: technologies such as HTML, XHTML, CSS, DOM, UAAG, RDF, XML, JavaScript and EcmaScript
- Discussing best practice in these technologies
- Announcements of tools that can help build standards compliant sites
- Accessibility and semantically correct markup
- W3C specifications, drafts and proposals
- Useful resources that promote knowledge in Web Standards
- Site reviews and critiques
- Assistance with aspects of web standards such as site checking, layout issues etc.
The mail list does not cover:
- Non-Web Standards related issues and support
- Discussion of server-side scripting beyond that directly involved with Web Standards
- Discussion of content management/web publishing system issues beyond those directly involved with Web Standards (there is a CMS list for that purpose, Log in and go to Edit your login details and mail list subscriptions and set your preferences to "Full CMS list" or "CMS list in digest mode")
- Detailed software support such as using a browser, installing a server, installing any tools etc.
- Product and service advertisements of a purely commercial nature
- Employment opportunities
Asking for help on the list
We encourage people to ask for help on the list. One of the primary goals of this group is to help members move towards building sites that are standards compliant, so we do not want to stop members posting questions of this nature to the list - in fact, we encourage it!
However, you can make it easier for other members to help you if you follow the basic guidelines below when you are having problems. Keep in mind that they are suggestions only. There are not essential, but following them will help other people track down your problem more quickly and easily.
- Set up a sample page that shows just the problem in action.
- Validate your HTML code
- Validate your CSS code
- Test the page on a range of browsers - as many as you can get access to.
- Post your problem to the list with the following info:
- a link to the sample url
- a link to the css file if it is separate
- a short, clear explanation of the problem
- a list of browsers and how they render the problem
It may also help to have a read through "How To Ask Questions The Smart Way"
The list archive
There is a searchable list archive within the members section (as well as the public ones at http://www.mail-archive.com/wsg@webstandardsgroup.org/ and http://www.mail-archive.com/listdad@webstandardsgroup.org/)
Digest Mode
Log in and go to Edit your login details and mail list subscriptions and set your preferences to "WSG list in digest mode"
Reporting problems with the list
If you have problems with anything to do with WSG site or mail list, please notify Peter and Russ off-list (memberhelp @ webstandardsgroup.org). Be aware that we may not respond to you immediately, but we try to respond as quickly as we can.
Unsubscribing
You can delete your membership entirely using the Unsubscribe page.
All members can easily manage their subscriptions. Simply log in to the Members section and go to Edit your login details and mail list subscriptions
The list administrators (and Core members) reserve the right to unsubscribe any member from the mail list(s) or delete their membership and ban them from re-joining entirely. Reasons include:
- Personal attacks on or derogatory statements about any other person, whether they are a WSG member or not
- Unfriendly, abusive, disrespectful or rude behaviour
- Profanity or smut on-list
- Repeatedly replying to threads that have been closed
- Ignoring list guidelines despite warnings - especially 'read' and 'delivery' receipts and vacation messages
