AJAX (Asynchronous JavaScript and XML) gives web pages the ability to act as desktop applications using invisible data communication and seamless refreshing of individual page elements. This has the potential to either ruin the Web or propel it into a new era.

Cameron Adams introduces the technology behind AJAX, explores its pros and cons, and discusses current best practices for its development.

Minor microphone problems at the start, but worth persisting with!

Cost?

There is no cost to attend. No, really! Food and beverages are kindly being made available thanks to SitePoint. SitePoint is a Melbourne-based company who, when not handing out free pizza, publish articles and books on best practice web development, with a focus on web standards. Their discussion forums are also home to the web's most active web development community, so I encourage you to check them out at www.sitepoint.com if you haven't already.

Other Important Stuff

Please ensure you arrive well before the presentation begins. The door will be locked to the public by 7pm so it is important you arrive on time. Besides, how could you pass up free pizza?

For catering purposes, please register for this event via the Melbourne WSG online calendar. Click on the event and select the "Register for this event" link, where you will be asked to enter your name and an email address.

If you experience difficulties with this process, you can also RSVP by sending an email to melbourne AT webstandardsgroup DOT org. Your RSVP is appreciated, especially for popular presenters as room space may be limited.

By the way you can also subscribe (iCal | RSS) to the Melbourne WSG calendar which is updated as events are confirmed.

Who Should Attend?

Anyone interested in best practice web design or development is welcome to attend. The meetings are very informal and we always allow time for open discussion.

One of our strong points is that the group has a broad range of skills and interests within the web development area (Flash, PHP, Ruby, DOM Scripting, CSS, XML, usability, accessibility etc). This means that discussions are always lively. All of us are interested in web standards!
